The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) was established in accordance with the provision of section 197, sub section 1 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. EDSIEC was created with the aim of conducting free, fair, credible, and acceptable Local Government Elections in Edo State. Since its inception, EDSIEC has been at the forefront of promoting democratic principles and electoral integrity in the state.
The mandate of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission is to conduct free, fair, credible, and acceptable Local Government Elections in Edo State. The rationale for this is to strengthen democratic structures and governance at the grassroots level, bringing the dividends of democracy to the people and improving their standard of living. EDSIEC is committed to upholding the highest standards of transparency, honesty, and integrity in all its electoral activities.

Organizing, conducting, and supervising all elections to local government councils in Edo State, in accordance with the law and best practices.
Ensuring that elections are conducted in a transparent, free, fair, credible, and acceptable manner, thereby enhancing public confidence in the electoral process.
Promoting voter education and awareness to enhance citizen participation in the electoral process, thereby strengthening democracy at the grassroots level.
Upholding the principles of democracy and good governance, and contributing to the development of a vibrant and inclusive political system in Edo State.
